We bought the Hand Goop WITH PUMOUS for $1.99 in a tub.
It took all the soot off the face of the stone fireplace AND the walls easily when applied dry with a sponge and rubber gloves, and then rinsed with a wet sponge.
Thanks rick m!

The only way I know how to clean this would be this way, Find another rock similar to your fire place, with warm clear water, soak the rock, then rub the fire place, this will bring the fire place back to it麓s nice new look, A bit of hard work but this is the best way to clean the rock work. Don麓t use detergent麓s or bleach as this will only eat away at the stone
Another thing we professionals do to clean up brick is muratic acid. You must use it carefully and with gloves. It is a serious, caustic acid, and will burn you badly if you get any on you.
there is a masonry cleaner available from Rutland products that is designed specifically for this purpose. any specialty fireplace store should carry it or be able to order it.
