http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_o鈥?/a> it doesn't really seem too clear....I don't think anyone know for sure
this was an old folk song from way back in the early 1900s, as has been pointed out...there are a number of different recorded versions, and it's ironic that the animals' version became so popular considering they changed around the lyrics from the original
It may have been some traditional tune handed down throughout the Delta bluesmen of the 1920s or earlier

Here's one opine

Alan Lomax, the famous musicologist, on one of his extremely important field-recording trips to the Southern States of America recorded ';The Rising Sun Blues';, on September 15th, 1937, and credited to Georgia Turner of Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Possibly the song was an old English, Scottish or Irish folk song, or melody, that had been brought over to these mountainous regions of America by British settlers a hundred or more years before. The words were obviously altered as New Orleans was THE den of iniquity in the South. We have heard of a version in England, whose lyrics are, ';There is a house in Lowerstoft they call the Rising Sun';
think it was Eric Burton who was lead singer with band called The Ainmals who had a big hit with it late 60';s. lots of covers of this song but the Animals were the orginial.
The Animals
the animals BUT muse also sung it.
The Animals were the first to write and record the song, and a zillion others have since done covers!
